By marketing

Luca J Martin CocoCoast is one of Australia’s most exciting young surfing talents — a rising athlete with world-class potential and a competitive record that’s already turning heads globally.

A back-to-back winner of the iconic Occy Grom Comp in the Under 16s division, Luca has established himself as a dominant force in junior surfing. His momentum continued with major achievements including winning the Queensland Championship and taking out the Under 16 MR Australian Championship. In 2024, he earned selection as the first reserve for the Australian Under 14 Boys Irukandjis team for the ISA World Junior Titles — a testament to his precision, power, and competitive maturity. With a style that blends speed, flow, and fearless progression, Luca represents the next wave of global surf talent—authentic, disciplined, and completely dialled into the energy, flavour, and performance that CocoCoast celebrates.

We sat down with Luca for a quick Q&A to get to know the person behind the power turns — from what drives him, to the moments that shaped him, to what he reaches for after a big session in the water.

1. Luca J Martin — welcome to the CocoCoast fam.

Thank you for having me, I’m so stoked to be part of the team.

2. Everyone’s got a story — how did you first get hooked on surfing?
My older brother used to surf every day and so we were always at the beach. Mum says when I was little I’d just sit on the sand and eat all the snacks then ask to go home but then I started joining him and from about 5 years old I was totally hooked. Now I need to be in the ocean every day, at least once or I don’t feel myself.

3. Best surf ever — where was it, who were you with, and what made it epic?
At Kirra for the Alfred swell with my best mate Joey because we were pushing each other to go bigger and scarier waves and I ended up getting some of the best barrels of my life.

4. Worst surf ever — the one that still makes you laugh (or cringe) when you think about it?
Any surf where I’ve hurt myself or broken a board. It’s the worst feeling getting a fin chop or another injury and as much pain as you’re in, knowing it’s going to keep you out of the water for a while makes the pain even worse!

5. Before you paddle out, what’s your must-do ritual — a song, a snack, or something you always say to yourself?
I pray to get good waves and not get hurt.

6. Do you have a lucky board or something you always take to a comp?
I always have a banana before a heat, it started years ago, and it’s become a ritual. I’m not sure it’s good luck because whether I have a good heat or not I’ve still had the banana, but it’s become part of my pre heat routine.

7. After a big session, what’s your go-to CocoCoast flavour — and why that one?
I’m loving the lychee, especially after a long session in the surf because it’s so tasty it’s like a reward for all the effort and it’s a bonus it’s also hydrating.

8. We talk a lot about ‘better-for-you hydration’ — what does that mean to you?
When your surfing heaps or doing comps you can get really dehydrated and plain water doesn’t always hit the spot and soft drinks only give you a quick energy burst but don’t make you feel hydrated. Coconut water gets you rehydrated fast plus it tastes awesome.

9. If CocoCoast could name a flavour after you, what would it be called?
Bango — a combination of two of my favourite things, barrels and mangoes.

10. And last one — describe your perfect day in three words (and yes, CocoCoast can totally be one of them).
Epic waves, empty line up, post-surf CocoCoast.
